At Kali Grown, we’ve been growing from seed since we were kids. Long before we studied plant biology or dialed in environmental controls, my family taught me one lesson that still guides every breeding project and every season:

“Keep it simple.”

I’ve tried just about every germination method out there — paper towels, soaking seeds, humidity domes, starter plugs, heating mats, and fancy products promising sky-high success rates. Some worked okay. Others just added unnecessary steps.

In the end, I always came back to that simple advice from the garden.

“Success comes from solid roots.”

Whether you’re growing vegetables, flowers, or cannabis, the foundation is the same: a strong root system.

The first few days of a seedling’s life set the tone for everything that follows. A vigorous seedling with healthy roots almost always becomes a vigorous, resilient plant.

Too many growers obsess over nutrients, lighting, and equipment while overlooking the most critical stage — what happens below the soil.

Start With Quality Genetics

A seed can only express what’s inside it.

Choose mature, well-stored seeds that are firm, full, and have rich coloration with natural patterning. Quality genetics dramatically improve your chances of strong germination and healthy growth.

Our Preferred Germination Method: Direct Sowing

After years of experimenting, our favorite method is also the simplest: sow directly into the final growing medium.

Plant the seed ¼ to ½ inch deep in lightly moistened soil or your preferred medium. Cover gently (don’t pack it down) and let nature take over.

Direct sowing lets the taproot grow straight and uninterrupted. Every time you move a germinating seed, you risk damaging that delicate root — the very foundation the plant will rely on for its entire life.

Water Is Important — But So Is Oxygen

One of the biggest mistakes new growers make is overwatering.

Seeds need moisture to wake up, but they also need oxygen. Saturated soil can drown developing roots before they ever break the surface.

Keep the medium evenly moist, not soaking wet. When in doubt, wait another day.

Temperature Makes a Difference

Seeds like consistency. Aim for 75–80°F during germination. Big temperature swings create stress during the most vulnerable stage of a plant’s life.

Outdoor Seed Starting: Work With Nature, Not Against It

When growing outdoors, we believe in starting seeds in line with the natural season. No artificial lights needed — just good genetics meeting real outdoor conditions from day one.

This approach gives us the best chance to select the most vigorous, healthy seedlings to carry forward in our breeding journey. Plants that thrive in their true environment early on tend to be stronger and better adapted.

Our Planting Window in Hardiness Zone 9a

Our ideal window for putting seedlings directly in the ground is roughly April 15th through May 26th.

  • Time your planting to go in the ground after the last expected freeze.

  • Have tarps or row covers ready and watch the forecast.

  • If nighttime lows drop below 55°F, cover the seedlings for protection.

Once nighttime lows consistently stay above 55°F, you’re good to go. This timing sets your entire season up for success.

Plant Timing = Plant Size

  • Want big plants 8'+ tall? Put them in the ground in mid-to-late April. They’ll have the full season to stretch.

  • Prefer more manageable plants that finish around 6'? Mid-to-late May works great.

Let Nature Do the Work

Patience is everything. Some seeds pop in 2 days, others take a week or more. Resist the urge to dig them up. Trust the process.

Strong Roots Build Strong Plants

At Kali Grown, the strongest plants aren’t built with shortcuts — they’re built with the right environment and time.

Whether we’re evaluating thousands of seedlings in a breeding run or planting a few in the backyard, the philosophy stays the same:

Keep it simple.

Give seeds quality genetics, warmth, balanced moisture, oxygen, and patience. Then step back and let the plant do what it has evolved to do for millions of years.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of products promising faster germination, but none replace the fundamentals: healthy seeds, strong roots, good soil, and patience.

Sometimes the best advice isn’t found in a fancy gadget. It’s the same thing your dad told you years ago while standing in the garden...

Together we grow!
